Someone (Professor Brian Cox?) was on the television talking about 'Spiral' galaxies. Apparently, there are vast numbers of them. And they are staggeringly huge. They each contain up to a billion stars and are spread across trillions of miles of space. Makes you feel kind of small and insignificant doesn't it? We started with some vague sense of trying to capture that scale. And promptly failed. So, in the best traditions of 'Plan B', we went for the shape of them instead.
