The artist’s palette

Five colours.
A world of character.

Lowry’s famously restricted palette brought northern streets, industrial scenes and distinctive figures to life. Just five colours — mixed into an unmistakable world of light, depth and character.

Flake white

The light ground against which his world takes shape.

Ivory black

Dark silhouettes, outlines and the rhythm of the crowd.

Yellow ochre

Earthy warmth within the industrial landscape.

Prussian blue

Deep blue tones that add shadow and depth.

Vermilion

A flash of red that draws the eye.

The inspiration

A style you know. A perspective all his own.

Lowry saw industrial Britain differently. His elongated figures, often called “matchstick men”, and deceptively simple forms transformed mill scenes and industrial landscapes into something unmistakably his own.

Much like Blake Mill, he understood that standing out requires a unique perspective, not just following convention.
