A white work shirt with L.S. Lowry art inside the collar

Most white work shirts are chosen for what they don’t do. They don’t draw attention or cause comment, and after a few years they don’t feel like yours either.

The White Sateen Shirt with Lowry Going to Work Accents does the first two jobs and skips the third. From across a meeting room, it’s a crisp white shirt. Inside the collar, the mitred cuffs and the button placket, there’s a small-scale print taken from L.S. Lowry’s Going to Work painting, made in collaboration with The Lowry in Salford, Greater Manchester.

A painting about going to work, on a shirt you wear to work

Going to Work is classic Lowry, with crowds of figures making their way into the working day. Lowry knew that routine well. He spent more than forty years collecting rents in Pendlebury, painted in the evenings, and was famously quiet about the day job. A shirt that keeps its art out of sight during office hours seems like something he would have understood.

Where the print shows

The accent appears when you turn back a cuff or undo the top button at the end of the day. It runs down the button placket too. These days, that’s about as close as most work shirts get to a tie. In the morning meeting it’s simply a good white shirt, and nobody else needs to know the print is there until you decide to show them.

What keeps it sharp at five o’clock

The shirt is made from 100% organic cotton sateen, which is soft and breathable, with a slight sheen that stops white from looking flat. The cutaway collar is fused, so it keeps its shape through the day instead of going limp by lunchtime.

The fit is semi-tailored. It’s shaped enough to look smart under a jacket, but it’s a long way from slim, and there’s real room through the body so it stays comfortable from the first coffee to the last meeting. Sizes run up to XXXL, and men of all builds wear our shirts happily. If you’re unsure, our size chart will help, and the team is always glad to advise.

Every Blake Mill shirt is made to the same standard, in the same family-owned factory we’ve used from the beginning. What changes from shirt to shirt is the story behind it.

You’ll find this shirt in the Lowry collection, alongside the fully printed versions for days when you’d rather have the figures on the outside.
